Members of the DEGRO working group Students/Club 100 visit Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG production

Seneffe, Belgium, November 1, 2017. On Friday, medical students of the working group Students/Club 100 of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO) were invited to visit the IsoSeed® I-125 production facility at Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG in Berlin, Germany. The group, interested in radiotherapy, was accompanied by Professor Franz-Josef Prott, radiotherapist at St. Josefs-Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany, and chairman of the working group as well as Professor Haverkamp, leading physicist of the Clinic for Radiation Therapy in the University Hospital Münster.

Dr. Hasselmann, Managing Director of Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG and Member of the Board of Directors of Eckert & Ziegler AG, left, and Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG employees say goodbye to the DEGRO working group Students/Club 100

During the guided tour, the students were shown the different steps of the automatic I-125 seed production, with its high-quality requirements and radiation protection standards. This includes the insertion of the IsoSeed® activity carrier into the titanium capsule, followed by the laser welding and leakage test, as well as the verification of the activity and the source anisotropy that are carried out as the final production steps.

In addition, Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG representatives gave an excursus regarding permanent (LDR implantation) and temporary (HDR afterloading) brachytherapy techniques, scope of application and a hands-on workshop with IsoSeed® dummies and HDR applicators. "The aim of this visit was to introduce the students to brachytherapy as an integral part of radiation therapy for the treatment of many tumor sites. Visiting a production site and getting insights from an established brachytherapy provider was a well perceived addition to regular classes", states Professor Prott.
