Eckert & Ziegler Iberia says thank you to the participants of the Spanish HDR Brachytherapy User Meeting 2016

Seneffe, Belgium, October 17, 2016; Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG Iberia successfully held its first HDR Brachytherapy User Meeting on October 6, 2016 in Madrid, Spain. Users from MultiSource® and SagiNova® installations participated.

"With more than 10 afterloader installations in Spain and more to come, we took the opportunity to gather our users and generate an open debate on opportunities and challenges in HDR brachytherapy", says Aurora Gutiérrez, Area General Manager for Iberia. "The 25 attendees consisted of physicists as well as radiation oncologists, which enabled us to discuss topics from both viewpoints. We would like to thank our participants for their contributions and look forward to the next User Meeting", she adds.

This was the first HDR Brachytherapy User Meeting held by the Spanish Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG subsidiary. Dr German Juan, Head of Radiation Oncology at the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, whose team gave two presentations during the meeting, concludes: "To hold this first HDR User Meeting in Spain is a good start for Eckert & Ziegler BEBIG to strengthen the brachytherapy technique and at the same time it was an event of great interest for the user."

The sessions focused on different questions. Besides image fusion for gynecological and multicatheter mama HDR brachytherapy, the focus was on prostate treatments. The users spoke highly of the SagiPlan® Prostate Module with regard to image fusion and applicator reconstruction. At the end of the day, the Spanish Eckert & Ziegler team took the opportunity to present the gynecological Mick(TM) HDR Applicators for use with the SagiNova® afterloader, presenting the latest addition to company`s broad applicator portfolio.

About High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy
HDR brachytherapy allows radiation oncologists to deliver the radiation quickly, most often as an outpatient procedure. During this procedure a computer driven apparatus, called a remote afterloading device, pushes the radioactive source attached to a drive wire through transfer tubes and applicators to the treatment site. The radioactive source can be moved in millimeter increments and remain in a certain position (dwell position) for a predetermined amount of time to optimize the dose delivered. When the desired treatment dose has been achieved, the remote afterloading device automatically withdraws the radioactive source so there is no residual radiation or radioactivity.
HDR brachytherapy has been used since the 1960s and today is applied to treat cancers in body sites such as gynecological, rectal, prostate and breast. The procedure enables an accurate and precise tumor-specific radiation dose delivery in a shorter course of treatment compared to other types of radiation treatment modalities while preserving the structure and function of the organ(s) treated and nearby.
